Around The World With Shirley Manson
Just when everyone was saying Pancake Mountain couldn't get cooler, especially after last week’s preview of the new Reggie Watts segment I'm still bringing my A-game to the table. This week I'm previewing a new segment that will hopefully become a permanent addition called, "Around the World with Shirley Manson" not
trying to be cryptic here. The name pretty much says it all.
This week Shirley travels to Germany where she'll look at music from Yodeling to KrautRock. Adding to the hilarity are two talking dogs named Sport and Veela. And please, save the emails asking 'how do I think this stuff up.” I just do.
The new website gets better and better by the day (shout out to Tracy Lee and Guilliaume Bernardeau) but, YES, some of your favorite clips have been taken down. Not forever, but we do like to rotate the music.
Pancake Mountain is a labor of love made up of volunteers (albeit some pretty kick-ass volunteers), but one of the benefits of this is we get
to do it how we want it. It’s like being the late night DJ at a small college radio station. You don't do it to break into the big times. You do it because you love it. And let’s face it, we all take joy in sharing things we appreciate with others.
So please no more emails about when will Kings Of Leon or Katy Perry be back up. Everything will continue to rotate.
Oh and just in case you started thinking "jeez, how could this be any cooler,” I think I forgot to mention that the "Around The World" theme song was written by Fugazi's Brendan Canty. So buckle up sucka, cuz
Rufus is ready for take-off.

Rufus R. Leaking

New Website Is Up!
Well, what do you think? Looking good, right?
If you find broken links, let us know, and maybe I’ll send you a gift (but probably not). You might also notice we have only 1 video up now? Good catch, but it's REGGIE WATTS for crying out loud. Not to mention it's an original song he wrote just for us!! I went Tom Cruise style crazy when I first heard it. Literally I started jumping up and down on my Roche-Bobois sofa, and I love that sofa, so that's KRAZY.
So where was I? Oh yeah, just one video for now, but eventually all your favorite YouTube clips will be migrated over to the new site. And, if your favorite videos aren't up at either location (Kings of Leon fans put a lid on it) be patient, I'll get to it. I am a very busy sheep after all.

Rufus R. Leaking

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Hello to All My Loyal Followers!
Thanks for all your emails telling me how much you love me and miss me and are hopelessly devoted to me. I love me too! Thanks for reminding me of how awesome I am. I know that many of you have been wondering what I've been up to over this past year. Well, I'm about to tell you... I've been putting together my plan for world domination!
2011 may be the most exciting year for Pancake Mountain yet. My time in LA hasn't just been one long frolic in the California sun; I've been busy finding co-conspirators here in H-wood to set my plan in motion. Together, we are working on producing new episodes in early 2011.
Also New in 2011:
- Brand NEW Pancake Mountain website. We are adding new content and even full episodes to our site so that you can enjoy our show and stay up to date all the time.
- Classic Pancake Mountain DVDs will be for sale again through the website. Never wonder what to get someone again-- all holidays, birthdays, and anniversaries are covered! From Mother's Day (your mom will love it!) to President's Day (Mr. President will love it!), or for no occasion at all, everyone needs a little more Rufus in their lives.
- As always, I'm looking for great bands. Let us know who you'd like to see and we'll see what we can do.
Before I sign off, I just wanted to say, whether you celebrate Kwanzaa, Christmas, Hanukkah, or Winter Solstice, have an excellent and safe holiday.
See you in 2011! (get excited)

A Reason to Like Mondays!
Seems like just yesterday I was running around singing Alice Cooper’s “Schools Out” and now I'm dragging my feet already back in school. It's just not fair!
I can't believe my summer in Montauk is already over and I'm back to hitting the books. (Who am I kidding? I don't hit the books, I know everything, but I feel sorry for you guys).
And while I don't need no stinking schooling anymore, I will be going back to work. Starting Monday I'll be posting new clips to the web site every week. It's a tough schedule, but I can do it. Plus I have a whole bunch of new interns (led by the GO-TO head of interns, DAN!) so things should run smoothly.
Here is what I’ve got planned for the next few weeks:
| September 14th |
Me and Jason Mraz singing "I'll Make You Mine" |
| September 21st |
Me and Lou Barlow singing "Daytime Kitty" |
Pretty impressive, right? So go have fun; get sunburned, eat too much ice cream, and check back in every Monday.
If you can't wait and want even more (dance parties, new pictures, witty banter, etc) don't forget to follow me on Facebook and Twitter. I'm at RufusRLeaking, but then you probably already knew that, didn't you?
Mucho amour,

Question: What do I have in common with Bruce Springsteen, The Beastie Boys and Phish? (Besides the fact that we're all super cool rockers that have fabulous stage presence?)
Give up?
We're all part of the biggest concert event of the season—Bonnaroo! That's right; me and my Pancake Mountain posse are heading down to Rock Tennessee like it ain't never been rocked before. Now while I won't be taking the main stage (that you know about), I will be helping you navigate the ins and outs of the festival. Every Thursday I’ll post a new tip to help you enjoy yourself.
Tips will include things like:
- What to Bring
- How to Get There
- Where to Stay
Two tip clips have already been posted for you to check out at Bonnaroo.com. But even though I’m doing a fabulous job, I WANT YOUR HELP!
~~~~~CONTEST TIME!!!!!~~~~~
Send me a video explaining what you like best about Bonnaroo. The only requirement is, it has to mention me and Bonnaroo at least once. You can rap, dance, use animation, do a bit of synchronized swimming, it’s really up to you, but please no profanity or talk of illegal activity .
And what will you get for all this hard work?
PRIZES!!
A PAIR OF TICKETS TO BONNAROO
A PANCAKE MOUNTAIN DVD
And (drum roll) an autographed 8x10 picture (suitable for framing) of yours truly.
And, that’s not all……
3 runners-up will also get a Pancake Mountain T-Shirt.
So go to YouTube (or any site you choose), upload the video, and send us the URL at Contest@PancakeMountain.com
Good-luck.
Hope to see you at the show!
Your pal,
Rufus Leaking.
Greetings from sunny (84°F) Los Angeles!
Well, I've recovered from the Melvins and the holidays and now I'm ready to kick-off the New Year with another GREAT Los Angeles dance party with The Walkmen.
When: Tuesday, January 20th.
Time: Doors open at 5:30 and we will begin filming around 6:00.
Where: The Music Box @ Fonda, 6126 Hollywood Blvd
How: Sign Up Now!
Here is one of my favorite clips of The Walkmen.
My contest this week: Come up with the best question to ask The Walkmen and win a beautiful Pancake Mountain t-shirt!!! (Remember, college kids, keep it clean). Email us your questions!
And last but certainly not least, I need help changing an LA law that's been on the books WAAAAY Too LONG. Believe it or not, it's illegal to drive more than two thousand sheep down Hollywood Boulevard at one time.
Come on people, it's 2009. What if me and 2000 of my fellow fluffy friends want to come and see the show on Tuesday? Oh, we can't go in one car. I for one say that is ridiculous. Write your congressman today!
That's it for now.
Your pal,
Rufus Leaking
Not to rub it in but did I mention it was 84 degrees in Hollywood today? Oh sorry, I think I did.
Our Los Angeles Dance Party with The Melvins was a BIG SUCCESS!!
Can it get any better than this?
Just when you thought that Pancake Mountain couldn’t get any cooler, we’ve upped the ante once again with one of my favorite bands, THE MELVINS! Watch the new video clip from the event!
This was our first LA dance party (and it will NOT be our last). We had so much fun. Thanks to everyone who came out! Special thanks to the Troubadour (Brian and Mike) for letting us film there and to Xbox 360 (Eric and Chrystina)
for letting us use the singing game 'Lips' that . But most of all Buzz, Dale, Coady, Jared, Tim, and eveyone who works with the Melvins, it was truly an honor.
NEW PANCAKE MOUNTAIN DVD!!!
If you’re unfortunate enough to live in a place that doesn’t carry my fantastic show, your prayers have been answered!
Hello Campers,
Starting to get the blues now that summer is almost over? Well then, come join us this Sunday for a day of fun and music when we help *Ben's Chili Bowl* celebrate their 50th Anniversary.
Ben's is a DC landmark and we're honored to be part of the celebration that will also include DC Go-Go legends Trouble Funk, EU, and Mambo Sauce! It all takes place at the 9:30 Club.
It's free, and I will be doing two news songs as well as giving away some awesome prizes. I go on at 2:00 pm sharp and will only perform for about an hour so that I can go eat HOT DOGS! (Though probably not as many hot dogs as this guy… ) But I’m still gonna eat a lot!
Ben's Chili Bowl 50th Anniversary Concert
Sunday, August 24th - The 9:30 Club, Washington DC
Trouble Funk • EU • Wes Felton and Friends • Mambo Sauce • Sage Infinity • V. Rich • Pancake Mountain
Doors open at 1pm. This is an all age, free event. First come. First serve. Admission limited by capacity.
We'll see you there - Don't Miss it!
When Eddie Vedder came to town last week he introduced me to an amazing family, the McDonoughs. The kids have a group called 3MJ and they wrote a song called "Make a Difference" which we performed with them before Eddie's show that night at Warner Theater. Check it out !
Oh and if you want to see the new "What We're About," check out the updated version here.
Rufus and Ratso
There's a long history of TV shows crossing over to other shows — The gang from Facts of Life appearing on Diff'rent Strokes, the cast of Fantasy Island taking a cruise on the Love Boat, and yes, even the cast of ER showing up on Friends—which you can technically count, although we ignore that one on principal. But today, my friends, you can cast all of those crossover classics onto the doo-doo pile. For now comes maybe one of the greatest ever as Chic-a-go-go visits Pancake Mountain in Episode 10.
Episode 10 finds Chic-a-go-go's Ratso and PM's Rufus looking back at their road to super stardom, while commenting on materialism, pop culture, and of course ROCK! Featuring music from X, Jenny Lewis, The Meat Puppets, Built to Spill, Iggy Pop and many more.
If you live in Chicago you can watch this ground-breaking episode TODAY at 3:30 pm (CST) on channel 19.
If you don't live in Chicago, we will be printing a schedule of where you can see it very soon.
Viva la Ratso!
SXSW
SXSW 2008 is on its way, and to celebrate, we have re-posted some clips from the fun we had last year. First up The Emeralds, a Japanese group, who showed up without their translator but thank goodness they knew the words to AC/DC's "Hells Bells".
We have a surprise birthday party for the Watson Twins BUT the real surprise comes later when they realize Rufus has a brother!!! check out the fun.
Dance Party At The Avalon
Saturday, February 9th, 10:30am to 11:30
Featuring the Video Artist Mike Relm who is currently touring with The Blue Man Group.
You can read more about Mike on his MySpace page : http://www.myspace.com/mikerelm or on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Relm
He's going to be creating completely new video works just for us using very kid friendly sources: Pancake Mountain videos plus live feed of the kids. This will be a bit different from his usual shows where he might use such sources as Fight Club, Bjork, and Rage Against The Machine. There are some cool clips from his shows on YouTube but they all aren't exactly kid friendly (language) so I won't link to them directly. Don't worry, our show will be G rated.
We're really excited about this and seeing what he is able to create using us as his source material. February looks to be a very exciting month at The Mountain and this is a great way to kick it off!
We don't usually charge anything for Dance Parties but we have some extra expenses for this one that we need a little help in covering. $5 or $3 for Avalon Members
The theater will seat 450, buy your ticket at the door.
Like Sade, We're Coast to Coast
Hey Everyone,
Your ol' pal Rufus Leaking here to remind you that if you live in New York, you can watch a new episode of Pancake Mountain tomorrow morning (Saturday, January 25th) at 11:30 on Time-Warner Cable channel 34.
Everyone else will have to settle for this little clip of me going to L.A. and singing with the great Katy Perry. More of this trip will be posted later, as I had quite an adventure with my tour guide: the (sometimes) lovely Sam Shelton.
Stay tuned as we have lots of dance parties coming up next month. Now off to sleep, this time change is killing me.
Love is all around,
Rufus Leaking.
BTW: Wanna be like the big apple and get Pancake Mountain before we sell-out, I mean, er, make the logical leap to a network? Then write to Dan@pancakemountain.com and tell him YOU WANT YOUR PM!
HAPPY NEW YEAR
What's in Store for 2008?
What a year! Though we didn't release a show until the last week of the year, that didn't stop us from shooting great stuff all year and getting named one of the top 10 TV shows of 2007 by the Los Angeles Times along with 30 Rock and our good friends at "YO GABBA GABBA".
How do we do it? For crazy insight, check out this article in Conde Naste Portfolio magazine - LOST ON PANCAKE MOUNTAIN. 2008 here we come, full steam ahead.
Can You Draw?
Draw us a cool comic and win your very own "Mini-Rufus"
We're putting together a collection of Pancake Mountain comics to include in our soon to be released "best of" DVD and we want you to help us. Use an experience you might have had at a dance party, a favorite interview with Rufus and a band or feel free to make up any story you want (just make sure you include Rufus in it). Try to put the comic(s) onto one 8.5x11 page or less. Each page can contain as many panels as you need.
We will try to include as many as we can in our DVD booklet and the best (5) will win a RUFUS gift basket.
Special Promo basket features a handmade mini-Rufus, our holiday album, and every PM DVD (and maybe some nuts and chocolates-who knows).
